“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see” – Edgar Degas
Our house was turned into an art studio for a few days as my daughters worked on their 5th grade art project. Each student in the class was given an artist to learn about and then try to recreate one of their pieces. I attended the “gallery” where each piece was displayed, as the artists stood by proudly. I was amazed at the level of skill displayed by these ten- and eleven-year-olds.
I thought if any of these budding artists hope to make money from it one day, they may find it worthwhile to consider their brand, not just the pretty pictures they want to create.
While many of these children had done a good job presenting their interpretation of Rembrandt, Mondrian, Andy Warhol, and others, it would be too far to say that any of these were original and hence they lacked the identity to build a brand.
An amazing exhibit last year at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, showcased art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel and how he developed the brand of impressionist painters like Degas, Monet, Renoir among others.
This trend of creating brand value in art persists today. An Advertising Age article summed it up saying “Buyers buy brands, not art. The name on the lower right-hand corner of the picture is what’s important. Not the picture itself.” Evidence of this value is clear in the millions of dollars top art receives and the global art sales of $63.8 billion last year. Now that’s some serious brand value!
